What are colleges/universities looking for?
They
want students who will be able to handle the academic rigors of a four-year college/university. The main measures of this
ability, grades and test scores, are crucial. They want students who have taken the most rigorous courses their high school
has to offer. They are looking for students who have taken challenging coursework, participated in and contributed to their
school and community, show initiative, maturity, and integrity. Sports and participation in clubs and commissions on campus
are vital to making a well-rounded student. Through these activities, you can demonstrate how well you fit in to the entering
class and how you will make a difference on their college campus.
Good
advice, always put academics first. Participate in activities because you enjoy them, not because you think they will be your
ticket to college. Admission officers are looking for students who are fully involved in one club (president, treasurer, and
fundraiser manager) rather than a student who “lists” clubs and activities just to show involvement.
